Responding to Poetry

Name of the poem: Out

Name of the author: Robert Frost

Q1. What is this poem about?

This poem is about a little boy that works as a lumberer in the forests of Vermont, New England. It talks about how the child dies by accidentally cutting off his hand with the buzz saw when his sister comes to call him for supper.

Q2. What is most striking to you about this poem?

One of the most striking features of this poem is that Frost has conveyed so much in few lines. He uses blank verse format with a loose iambic pattern to make words simple and easy to understand, additionally, the reader can relate to the work environment of then and now with ease as not much has changed since then. Frost is successful in painting a picture in the mind of his readers from beginning to end as the events unfold.

Q3. Point out at least three literacy technique which is used in this poem.

Frost uses personification and metaphor at multiple levels as the poem develops. Imaginary has contributed to created in a image in the mind of readers of the poem.

The mood of the poem is rather tragic and indicates feelings of anger, innocence, death and detachment.

Q4. How does the poem develop? In other words, how does it change from beginning to end? Does the speaker realise something new? Does he or she change emotionally?

The poem develops in multiple stages. The child uses to cut the trees but the scenario changes when by mistake the boy cut his hand. When he was taken to the hospital he became a child who does not have any pressure on mind and responsibility.

Q5. What do you think is the main idea, emotion or impression the poem is trying to communicate?

The main idea behind Frost's “Out, Out--” is to show the injustice that befalls on the life of innocent people due to reasons they cannot control or directly related to them. Robert's emphasis on boy's decline can be related to the War that led to the death of many innocent people as they had no control to rectify their situation.

Q6. What is your personal response to this poem?

In my opinion, this poem is straight-forward and democratic, conveying that every person has the right to live their life on their own terms and voice their opinions. It depicts a tragic picture of how life's cost is so little that we prioritize our work so much to even stop and grieve for a life lost.

Responding to Poetry

Name of poem: My Life had Stood---a Loaded Gun

Name of author: Emily Dickinson

Q1. What is this poem about?

The poem talks about the life of a gun that had “stood” until the “owner passed” and decided to take it with him wherever he went. The rest of the poem talks about what the gun does to serve his master day and night during his travels.

Q2. What is most striking to you about this poem?

The one thing that Emily has attempted with this poem is to make it mystic. It riddles the readers and lets them have their own interpretations of it. Thus it can have multiple meanings of its own.

Q3. Point out at least three literacy technique which is used in this poem.

Personification, in the context of gun, Metaphor, in the context of life, and word play are the most important devices that have been used throughout the poem. These devices are successful in developing a dark tone creating a scenario where death outlives life.

Q4. How does the poem develop? In other words, how does it change from beginning to end? Does the speaker realise something new? Does he or she change emotionally?

The poem develops in three stages, one when the speaker is powerful yet of no use, next, when its important and lastly, when death outlives life of the owner. Through 'Loaded gun', Dickinson has attempted to talk about multiple things at once. For instance, the life of a woman who is suppressed yet dangerous but when given the power can destroy many people. Another interpretation can be that “Him” and “His” denote to God and how everything is at the mercy of the Lord.

Q5. What do you think is the main idea, emotion or impression the poem is trying to communicate?

I like the puzzle that this poem creates for its readers making them feel multiple emotions of despair, loneliness, happiness, anger all at once. It has been construed with a genius to critique without letting anyone have a hint about it.

Q6. What is your personal response to this poem?

The subtlety of Dickinson text can indicate her brilliancy as a poet as well as the sadness and anger she felt towards the societal suppression of women.

Responding to Poetry

Name of poem: My Papa's Waltz

Name of author: Theodore Roethke

Q1. What is this poem about?

The poem talks about a child who is being waltzed by his drunk father around the kitchen while his mother frowns in disapproval till the boy is taken to bed by his father.

Q2. What is most striking to you about this poem?

The poem has a distinct theme which is both light and dark showing both carefree attitude as well as parental issues.

Q3. Point out at least three literacy technique which is used in this poem.

Roethke uses ABAB rhyme scheme and a trecet iamb dealing with controversial issues with not much of poetic devices infused by the poet except for simile and metaphor.

Q4. How does the poem develop? In other words, how does it change from beginning to end? Does the speaker realise something new? Does he or she change emotionally?

The tone relishes a sense of happiness with a slight fear and ambiguity in the minds of the user indicating that things may not be how they seem. The protagonist reminisces a childhood memory that is as chaotic as the words used throughout the poem. Roethke tries to emote the idea of homesickness in a rather uncertain way.

Q5. What do you think is the main idea, emotion or impression the poem is trying to communicate?

In my opinion, the poem does not give away much about what exactly the poet was trying to communicate through this piece.

Q6. What is your personal response to this poem?

There is no single and certain answer to the backdrop to 'My Papa's Waltz' which is rather confusing than simple.
