Our Earth is a beautiful yet a mysterious place with its quirks, weirdness, highs and lows, and irregularities. From scorching heat of equator to the minus temperatures in poles, and from largest ocean to smallest island, it is filled with many unusual facts that are beyond everyone’s imagination. The more we try to get into the depth of these mysteries, the more anomalies we discover. We have listed a few bizarre facts related to the geography, geology, and the earth. Some of these are mesmerizing, some bewildering, and some defy logic. Take a read:

1) Russia is so massive that it has 11 different time zones.

World's largest country, Russia spreads over 17,075,200 square km in area and has 11 different time zones. The current time range observed here is UTC+02:00 to UTC+12:00 which means when one part of the country enjoys the morning breakfast at 7 am; the other part enjoys the evening snacks at 6 pm.

2) Antarctica is the driest place on the Earth.

As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is the driest place on the Earth with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert. It covers ninety percent of the world’s ice, and seventy percent of all freshwater available on the planet is stored here. As it experiences an average yearly total precipitation of two inches, it is mostly a desert.

3) The Chamarel plain in Mauritius has sand in seven distinct colors.

Located in the Riviere Noire District of south-western Mauritius, the Chamarel plain is known in the whole world for having a small area of dunes made up of sand in seven distinct colors. It is a result of a difference in cooling of portions of the molten volcanic rock at different temperatures. One can see these seven colors throughout the day, but when sunlight hits the dew mingled sand in the morning, its brightest hue can be enjoyed.

4) Mount Chimborazo is the closest to the outer space.

At 29,029 feet above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest spot on our planet, but it is not closest to the outer space. Instead, Mount Chimborazo in the Andes, a 20,000-plus-foot peak, and Ecuador’s highest mountain, is the one closest to the moon. It is 1.5 miles closer to the planet than Mount Everest because it sits on the top of a bulge on the Earth.

5) Himalayan Mountains are regularly growing while the Appalachian Mountains are shrinking.

The Himalayan Mountain range located in Asia between the Indian subcontinent and Tibetan Plateau is growing continuously at the rate of 5 mm per year due to the constant collision of India into southern Asia. Its highest peak, Mount Everest is Earth's highest mountain above sea level with the current elevation of 29,029 feet. On the other hand, The Appalachian Mountain, once as tall as the Rocky Mountains, is regularly shrinking due to constant rainwater erosion and its highest peak, Mount Mitchell, only remains 6,684 feet high.

6) Australia’s Dingo fence is one of the largest man-made structures in the world.

With a length of 2,500 km, the Dingo fence in Australia is one of the largest man-made structures and the largest fence in the world. It was built in between 1880 to 1885 to protect the sheep flocks of southern Queensland from the dingoes (Australian wild dogs). It is famous as the Great Barrier Fence or the Wild Dog Barrier Fence 11 and is currently under the administration of Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

7) The Er Wang Dong cave in China has its own weather system.

The 441 m deep Er Wang Dong cave in China is so massive that it has independent weather system and vegetation. Apart from this, the Hang Son Doong cave in Vietnam, located in Laos-Vietnam border, too has its own weather system, vegetation, and fast flowing river inside. It also has the largest cave passage cross-section in the world.

These were a few of the hundreds of geographical facts that must have left you mesmerized. Share this knowledge with your family and friends and make them aware of the world they live in.
